Understanding Hail Damage Estimating

A professional guide to evaluating hail damage and preparing accurate dent repair estimates.

Hail damage estimating requires accurate evaluation of dent size, quantity, and location. Certified estimators must understand how to measure dents, count damage across vehicle panels, and apply matrix pricing.

Evaluating Hail Damage

Proper hail damage evaluation begins with a thorough inspection of the entire vehicle under appropriate lighting conditions. Estimators must assess each panel individually, identifying all impact points and recording their size and location.

Estimators must also identify prior damage versus hail impact damage. Accurate evaluation ensures proper repair planning and fair repair estimates.

Dent Counting

Accurate dent counting is one of the most critical skills for PDR estimators. Each hail impact must be individually identified and recorded. Estimators use specialized lighting to reveal all damage, including shallow impacts that may not be visible under normal lighting conditions.

  • Inspect each panel under reflection lighting
  • Count each individual impact point
  • Record dent size category (small, medium, large)
  • Note location on panel (edge, center, bodyline, etc.)
  • Document prior damage separately

Measuring Hail Dents

Hail dents are categorized by size. Common sizing categories used in matrix pricing include:

  • Dime size (under 0.5")
  • Nickel size (0.5" – 0.75")
  • Quarter size (0.75" – 1")
  • Half-dollar size (1" – 1.25")
  • Golf ball size (1.5"+)

Matrix Pricing

Matrix pricing is the standard estimating system used in the hail repair industry. Pricing matrices assign repair costs based on the number of dents per panel and their size category. Certified estimators understand how to accurately apply matrix pricing to develop fair and professional estimates.

Identifying Prior Damage

A critical skill for certified estimators is the ability to distinguish hail impact damage from prior damage. Pre-existing dents, paint chips, rust, or scratches should be clearly documented and excluded from the hail damage estimate. This protects both the repair facility and the vehicle owner.

PDR University Estimator Certification

PDR University's Estimator certification validates a professional's ability to accurately evaluate hail damage, apply matrix pricing, and develop professional repair estimates. Certified estimators demonstrate the knowledge and discipline required for accurate hail damage assessment.
